Existential Consulting on Desire, Intimacy and Sexual Meaning
Washington DC
Many people who search for sex therapy in Washington DC are not seeking techniques or diagnoses. They are seeking understanding. Desire may feel distant or muted. Intimacy may feel disconnected from meaning. You may be thoughtful, accomplished, and self aware, yet uncertain about what you want or why sexual experience no longer feels alive or true.
I offer existential consulting for individuals in Washington DC who want to explore the meaning of desire and intimacy rather than pursue clinical treatment.
This work is grounded in the belief that changes in sexual experience often reflect deeper questions of identity, agency, freedom, and recognition.
An Existential Orientation
Existential consulting is a reflective, interpretive process. It is not skills based, performance focused, or diagnostic. Sexual experience is approached as psychologically and philosophically meaningful rather than as a problem to be corrected.
Rather than asking how to restore desire, we ask what desire is responding to.
In our work, we may explore:
how desire is shaped by autonomy, responsibility, and self possession
how vigilance, control, or self monitoring interfere with intimacy
how sexual withdrawal can function as protection rather than dysfunction
how wanting and being wanted shape one’s sense of reality, worth, and selfhood
The aim is not optimization, but understanding.
How This Differs From Sex Therapy
Many people arrive here after searching for sex therapy or intimacy focused therapy and discovering that technique driven or directive approaches did not address what felt most essential.
While my background is in clinical sexology and existential psychotherapy, the work I offer to individuals in Washington DC is consultative rather than therapeutic. It does not involve diagnosis, treatment of mental health conditions, or the practice of psychotherapy as defined by state licensure laws.
The stance, however, remains depth oriented, careful, and grounded in serious psychological thought.
Who This Work Is For
This work is best suited for individuals who are:
psychologically minded and reflective
interested in depth rather than quick solutions
able to tolerate ambiguity and complexity
curious about meaning, authorship, and personal coherence
It is often a good fit for those who feel that something important is happening in their sexual or intimate life but do not want to reduce it to pathology.
